Since our early years, we have been continuously working to develop a sustainable food production system that can benefit society and the environment. Alara was the first cereal company in the world to be certified organic to later become a vegan brand. We challenge ourselves daily to be the most sustainable manufacturer on Earth and this is the reason behind what we call our four ‘pillars’ of Sustainability.
As a result of these four pillars, we also happen to align with the ten of the United Nation’s Sustainable Development Goals (SDG). In case you do not know much about the SDG, these goals were created by the United Nations and are the blueprint to achieve a better and more sustainable future for all. They address the most relevant global challenges including poverty, inequality, climate change, environmental degradation, peace and justice.
These are the ten SDG (out of 17) our practices align with at this very moment:
SDG 2 – Zero Hunger: we work with local (central London) food banks, including Food For All, the UK’s largest free meals provider, to send out free meals. We are now also delivering these free meals with our own electric cargo bike.
SDG 3 – Good Health and Wellbeing: we were the first muesli manufacturing business and brand owner to completely avoid salt, sugar and fat in its branded products.
SDG 6 – Clean Water and Sanitation: we have developed a rainwater harvesting system at our factory to get water for our permaculture forest garden.
SDG 7 – Affordable and Clean Energy: we have photovoltaic solar panels on site and our factory only uses 100% renewable green energy.
SDG 11 – Sustainable Cities and Communities: we work closely with our local community here in Camley Street and actively participate in developing plans to improve the area.
SDG 12 – Responsible Consumption and Production: aside from organic, we are also a fully vegan brand in an effort to mitigate climate change mitigation.
SDG 13 – Climate Action: we were the first brand to launch net zero carbon cereals. All the carbon emissions of these products are offset by donating to the charity Rainforest Saver.
SDG 14 – Life Below Water: we were the first UK cereal company to be completely plastic free after the introduction of our home compostable plastic-free film. This is essential to combat marine pollution.
SDG 15 – Life on Land: we have our own permaculture forest garden alongside our factory.
SDG 17 – Partnerships for the Goals: we lobby local and national governments on sustainability issues and work closely with our local community.
Every small action can make a world of difference and we are working hard to improve our practices to be as respectful as possible with the environment.
Our goal is to make our products good for all: your planet, body, and pocket.
Alara. Delicious and sustainable. Tasty without compromise. We think it is how food should be.
